How do I take measurements for my Cushions?

Using a flexible measuring tape (those grade school rulers are a bit unwieldy) you can measure either your current cushion or the furniture where the cushion will used. Measure the total distance to the nearest .25 of an inch, and please include everything attached to the cushion, such as welting or ties, so we can be as accurate as possible.

The measurements we need are listed on the product page (usually depth, width, and thickness),

We welcome any questions you have about taking measurements, and will gladly respond to your emails, with or without photos, to help you to stay on the right track.

How do I measure a trapezoid (i.e. bay window) shaped cushion?

To measure a trapezoid shaped cushion, measure in a straight line across the front of the cushion (where your knees rest) going in the same direction as the zipper – this is your front width measurement.

Then, measure in a straight line across the back of the cushion (where your back rests) going in the same direction as the zipper – this is your depth measurement.

Finally, measure from the bottom of the cushion (the side laying against the surface) to the top (facing the ceiling) – this is your thickness measurement.

How do I measure a round cushion?

To measure a round cushion, measure all the way across the cushion from left to right – this is your diameter and should be entered as both the width and depth with a notation that the cushion is round in the ‘Additional Information’ field when placing your order. Next, measure from the bottom of the cushion (the side laying against the surface) to the top (facing the ceiling) – this is your thickness measurement.

How do I measure a square cushion?

How do I measure for a sofa or loveseat cushions?

To measure for sofa or love seat cushions, please measure the complete width of your sofa or love seat. Sofa sets will consist of two (2) seat cushions and three (3) back cushions. Love seat sets will consist of one (1) seat cushion and two (2) back cushions.

When measuring, to prevent the back cushions from being too tall, please be sure to subtract the thickness of the seat cushion from the total height of the back cushion. For example, if your sofa has a seat cushion that is three (3) inches thick, and the back cushion from where the back and seat frames meet to the top of the seat is twenty (20) inches, you will want to order the back cushion height as seventeen (17) inches.

Then, measure from the bottom of the cushion (the side laying against the surface) to the top (facing the ceiling) – this is your seat thickness measurement.

For the back cushion, measure in a straight line from where the back cushion rests on the seat cushion to the top of the chair where the cushion would end (where your neck rests) – this is your back height measurement.

How would I measure from old covers or cushions?

If you are measuring old covers, please be sure to measure from seam to seam. If your cushion includes welting, do not include the welting in the measurement. You can note that as a separate measurement within the order notes.

The width is measured on the same side as the zipper (typically on the back of the cushion); depth is measured from the front of the cushion (where your knees rest) to the back of the cushion (where your back rests); thickness is measured as the height of the cushion.

For the most accurate measurements, we suggest placing your cushion flat on a solid, level surface with the zipper facing you.

Can I send my old cover for the cushion measurements to ensure they are accurate?

Absolutely! If you would like to duplicate the same shaped cushion and there are no modifications we can use your old seat cover. Please be aware however it will not be returned upon completion, as they are taken apart during the measuring and manufacturing process.

I would like to use a template to ensure my cushions are the right size; what type of material can I used for the template?

You can use either paper or fabric, though we find a light colored fabric is more functional than paper and the flexibility of fabric with the ability to use a marker to reflect curves and shapes makes building the pattern process easier and more accurate.

When your pattern is ready and cut, try it on the furniture to ensure the pattern fits and your measurements are correct. If a zipper is needed, please write “zipper” on the desired side. Please remember to write “top” and “bottom” on the appropriate sides of the pattern. Additionally, if you would like ties placed on any corners, please draw an arrow on those specific corners.
